ABSTRACT
With increasing electric energy consumption in technical institutions in Tanzania and renewed focus on using energy in ways that support the environment, ways of improving utilisation of electric energy in technical institutions in Tanzania have been discussed along with the recommendations.
Electric motor systems account for about 60 percent of global industrial electricity consumption and close to 70 percent of industrial electricity demand whereby it shows that electric motors are individual component which consumes much electricity than any other individual component and therefore the emphases for improving utilisation of electric energy in technical institutions in Tanzania is given to the control of electric motor consumption for the purpose of controlling electric energy consumption in technical institutions in Tanzania.
In this dissertation, means and purpose of determining total installed load to the motors have been discussed, factors influencing to an increase of electric energy usage have also been discussed. In addition, strategies to be adopted in order to improve the utilisation of electric energy in technical institutions in Tanzania have been outlined basing on the questionnaire and experiment results done on the selected sample motors.
Based on the results obtained in this study the following initiatives are proposed for improvement of the utilisation of electric energy in laboratories and workshops.
a) Proper maintenance strategies with proper maintenance schedule can reduce electric energy consumption.
b) Sufficient campaigns and effort on efficient use of electricity in working places may contribute to the savings of electric energy.
c) The adhesion of energy efficiency interventions such as information and education, feedback, energy labelling on appliances and incentives could lead to saving of electric energy.
d) Purchase of energy efficient appliances as a purchasing criterion could lead to saving of electric energy.
