ABSTRACT
This study aimed at developing maintenance performance model for improvement of maintenance strategies for the KIST workshops. It was important to conduct this research at KIST because the situation shows that reactive maintenance strategy that is exercised by KIST to their workshops is an ineffective and there is no adequate information concerning its maintenance performance model for improvement of maintenance strategies.
The study specifically, focused on assessing maintenance performance in the electrical and mechanical workshops; identifying maintenance performance problems for the workshops and developing maintenance performance model for improvement of maintenance strategies at workshops. The study employed descriptive research design where Karume Institute of Science and Technology was purposely selected. Both questionnaires and interview schedule were employed to get data from members of KIST mainly students, instructors, laboratory assistants and institution administrators. The analysis of data was made through Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.
This study found that the current maintenance performance at KIST workshops is not in right way because it results into failure of machines and led to technical practical delay or not done effectively. Data collected through interview and field observation identified a number of factors which have greater impact on maintenance performance including; managerial and administrative aspects, lower budget and lack of maintenance personnel. Also the results revealed that, there is no application of routine maintenance performance and this leads to increased cost when machines fail.
In this study a maintenance performance model for improvement of maintenance strategies of KIST was developed. Generally maintenance performance model is the model where researcher developed in order to help the KIST’s management for improvement maintenance strategies at Karume Institute of Science and Technology Zanzibar. Furthermore, preventive maintenance is recommended as maintenance strategies to rectify existing maintenance performance problems. |
