Development of computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for improving availability performance of teaching workshop machineries: A Case of Dar es Salaam Maritime (DMI)

Abstract

Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute’s Teaching Workshop Machineries are operating at very low availability performance as only six (20%) of its machineries out of thirty are available. The result of this is overworking of those few operating workshop teaching machineries and long hours of teaching sessions. The purpose of undertaking this research was to identify the causes of teaching workshop machineries failures, development of maintenance management system model and development of computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for improving availability performance of teaching workshop machineries at Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute. A mixed research style was used by data collected by using structured questionnaires and identified through literature review. Data analyzed by using multiple regression analysis and SPSS software and the model was developed validated and tested. The results showed that, the most significant variables that cause low availability performance of the teaching workshop machineries include lack of effective maintenance management, availability of spare parts and insufficient communication between the importance and supporting departments. The Institute (DMI) can improve the availability performance of its teaching workshop machineries by implementing the Developed CMMS and making sure that all spare parts are available in time and quantity. Also, the findings can be used by other similar institutions, and further study is recommended by using larger sample size.
